Interfacial gravity currents. I. Mixing and entrainment
نویسنده
چکیده
Experiments are performed to examine mixing and transport due to an intrusive gravity current in a twoand three-layer fluid. Successive passages of the intrusion act to increase the depth of the middle layer. The observed broadening rates and the deposition of potential energy are compared with theories that neglect mixing and entrainment processes. As the middle layer widens, a transition in the mass transport by the intrusion is observed: in a two-layer fluid the intrusion transports mass along the entire length of the interface; in a three-layer fluid with sufficiently deep middle layer the intrusion transports mass over a limited distance and simultaneously excites large-amplitude internal wave modes and solitary internal waves. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1483303#

Dynamics of Two-Dimensional Turbulent Bottom Gravity Currents
In light of previous numerical studies demonstrating a strong sensitivity of the strength of thermohaline circulation to the representation of overflows in ocean general circulation models, the dynamics of bottom gravity currents are investigated using a two-dimensional, nonhydrostatic numerical model. The model explicitly resolves the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, the main mechanism of mixing ...

We study entrainment in lock-release gravity currents using highly spatially resolved optical transmission experiments and quantitative analysis of the available potential energy of the flow. The principal results provide a resolution to the debate regarding the mechanism and degree of mixing in the head of a gravity current during the slumping phase. The nature of the complex internal mixing s...
متن کاملEntraining gravity currents
Entrainment of ambient fluid into a gravity current, while often negligible in laboratory-scale flows, may become increasingly significant in large-scale natural flows. We present a theoretical study of the effect of this entrainment by augmenting a shallow water model for gravity currents under a deep ambient with a simple empirical model for entrainment, based on experimental measurements of ...

Overflows are bottom gravity currents which supply dense water masses generated in high-latitude and marginal seas into the general circulation. In light of oceanic observations which indicate that mixing of overflows with ambient water masses takes place over small spatial and time scales, and studies with ocean general circulation models, which indicate that the strength of the thermohaline c...
متن کاملGravity currents in cold fresh water
We consider surface gravity currents in fresh water where the temperatures of the current and the ambient are on opposite sides of the temperature of maximum density. Buoyancy reversal may occur in the current, due to entrainment of ambient water to produce a mixture that is denser than the ambient. Using an empirical parametrisation of entrainment in lock-release gravity currents, the distance...
